A short tale that embodies the essence of Bewitched by Moonlight

Under the cathedral hush of a full moon, Elowen waited where the forest began to breathe. She had loved him in silence for years, loved him with the aching patience of moss on stone, while his eyes searched always for another woman’s face.

Tonight, she would wear that face.

She whispered the spell with trembling lips, binding her sorrow into glamour. Her reflection in a pool shifted, her dark hair turning to gold, her sharp features softening into the beloved likeness he longed for. When he arrived and saw her standing among the silvered trees, his breath caught, hope lighting his eyes like a candle.

He followed without question.

The forest welcomed them deeper, branches knitting overhead like clasped hands. Owls watched. The wind murmured secrets. Elowen’s borrowed smile never faltered, though her heart beat with terror and longing both. She wanted him close, even if closeness meant deception.

At the heart of the woods, she stopped.

“I cannot wear her forever,” she whispered, and the spell broke like glass.

Her true face returned; pale, haunted, desperate with love. He staggered back, horror dawning as the trees shifted, roots rising like grasping fingers. The path behind him had vanished, swallowed by shadow and thorn.

“Elowen,” he breathed, not with affection, but with fear.

“I only wanted you to see me,” she said softly.

The forest answered for her, closing its jaws. No matter how far he ran, the moon followed, and the trees led him always back to her sorrowful gaze; forever trapped in the labyrinth of a love he could never return.
