Book of Shadows

I found the book buried beneath the roots, wrapped in velvet that had long since rotted to threads. The leather cover was veined and supple, like something that had once lived. When I opened it, the scent of leather and tea rose like a memory.

The first page bore her name - Morwenna. My ancestor. The witch. The exile. The legend.

Her handwriting was sharp and deliberate, each sigil etched with purpose. But it was not just her voice I heard. Others had written here - generations of women, each adding their own ink. The margins were filled with notes in different hands, some elegant, some frantic. Spells, warnings, dreams. A lineage of ink and blood.

I should have been afraid. But I wasn’t.

The book welcomed me. Its pages turned for me. It showed me how to speak to the wind, how to read the bones of birds, how to listen to the silence between heartbeats.

Now I keep it wrapped in fresh velvet, hidden beneath the floorboards. I read it by candlelight. I write when the moon is high. I feel them with me - my mothers, my blood, my coven.
