Seance

Rain beat steadily against the tall windows of Wetherby Hall, turning the world beyond to a blur of black glass and lightning. Inside, the parlour glowed with wavering candlelight. Twelve guests sat in uneasy silence around a polished mahogany table — duchesses, colonels, widows, and poets — all pretending amusement, all secretly afraid.

At the head sat Lord Wetherby, his face pale and drawn, the brandy untouched at his elbow. Across from him stood Madame Orlova, the medium — tall, veiled, and unnervingly still. “We must not speak,” she said softly, her accent thick as incense. “They listen when we do.”

The room seemed to breathe with her words. Shadows lengthened; the candles bent inward, their flames drawn toward the center. Somewhere in the house, a clock faltered mid-tick.

Madame Orlova began to hum — a low, shivering note that made the crystal tremble. The table quivered beneath their hands. Then, from the dark, a voice answered.

It was not hers.

‘You have called me before… and forgotten.’

A duchess gasped. Lord Wetherby’s fingers clenched white against the wood. “Eleanor?” he whispered.

The candles flared violently — then went out. In the brief crimson glow from the dying hearth, the guests saw her: a woman’s form, pale and dripping, standing behind Wetherby’s chair, her hand resting gently on his shoulder.

When the lights were restored, Madame Orlova lay unconscious, her veil smoldering. Lord Wetherby was gone. Only the scent of damp earth lingered — and two wet handprints pressed deep into the velvet back of his seat.
